OUR HISTORY

The history of Surrey bikes in America is the history of the INTERNATIONAL SURREY COMPANY.

As a Surrey Rental Operator

In 1970, several importers brought Surrey bikes into the United States for commercial use in the rental industry. A Houston, Texas company imported the Gitane Rosalie, a uni-frame four-wheel cycle manufactured in France. That same year, Cliff Marshall Imports introduced the Selene Surrey, an Italian-made Surrey with a bolted-together frame, which debuted in Dennisport, Massachusetts as a rental cycle. A few months later, the Surrey Company opened rental locations in Kissimmee, Florida and Galveston, Texas. The Surrey Company's affiliate rental company, Beach Bike Rentals, rented cycles of all types, including the Rosalie and Selene, with great success.

As a Surrey Manufacturer

Through our experience as a rental operator, we encountered the abusive nature of the rental industry and the shortened useful life of Surrey bikes because of such abuse. More than 35 years ago, we began to evaluate the weaknesses of the product and worked with the importer to communicate these weaknesses to the manufacturer. The Surrey Company eventually found it necessary to set up a facility to remake certain components of the Surrey bike, including frame and awning parts. The Surrey Company was still importing Surrey bikes in the early and mid-80s but found that our suggested changes to improve the imported Surrey bike were being incorporated into cycles going to our competitors. It was at this time that the Surrey Company began manufacturing a rental cycle with no equal, a Surrey bike that was state of the art and could withstand the rigors of the rental industry. By 1996, the Surrey Company started exporting our Surrey bikes internationally, and the Surrey Company name gave way to the INTERNATIONAL SURREY COMPANY to reflect this growth in our profile.

From 1970 to the current day, we have supplied or operated rental agencies all over the United States and abroad. Simply put, no other company exists within or outside of the United States with more experience or knowledge of the Surrey bike and leisure cycle rental business than the INTERNATIONAL SURREY COMPANY.
